Most web sites have a "Privacy Policy" but most users don't ever bother to read it. At the same time, there is still widespread ignorance about the nature of cookies and similar technology, and how intrusive they can be (though not the cookies used on this site). Partly in response to this, the European Union introduced legislation in 2009 (European Directive 2009/136/EC) which, among other things, requires web sites to provide prominent information about their use of cookies and to obtain at least implied consent from users to their use of cookies. The European Directive has now been incorporated into UK law, and from 26 May 2012 is fully enforceable in the UK. It is therefore more important than ever for users to take some time to read the "Privacy Policy" of any web sites they are not already familiar with.

If you've got this far, then congratulations! You are one of the few people who have bothered to read the "Privacy Policy" on this site. As a reward for your time and effort, I am offering 10 free copies of my book, Through a Lens Darkly, to the first ten users who wish to claim it. If you wish to do so, click here to fill in your details in a short form.
